When you adopt a dog, you’re gaining a loyal companion and giving them a forever home. Adopting a new best friend is exciting, but it’s also a big decision. Cesar Millan says the choice shouldn’t be taken lightly. He stresses that it’s important to be honest with yourself about your lifestyle and routine. Finding a dog that’s a good match will lead to many years of joy together.
Practical things to keep in mind before adopting a dog
- Daily routines will change to include walks and bathroom breaks.
- You will need to pet proof your home for your dog’s safety.
- Dogs can be messy. You will have to clean up the fur, drool and dirt they bring into the house.
- Dog food, toys, and trips to the vet can be costly.
Take a reality check before you adopt a dog
It can be heartbreaking to walk through the animal shelter and see how many dogs are without homes. While it may be tempting to bring one home right away, Cesar Millan warns against making a rash decision out of pity. Millan says not to let your emotions take the lead. “When you see a dog, if you feel sorry for the dog or the dog is very cute, that’s not a good adoption.”
For Millan, a good adoption is when there is an energy match between the dog and its future owner.
“That good adoption is when you stay quiet and calm. You guys meet and the dog … gives you the social distance. The dog is telling you, ‘I trust you, but I respect you and we just met.’ That’s a good thing.”
Caring for your furry friend can be a commitment of around 15 years. It’s important to make sure that the two of you are the right fit.

Consider compatibility
Cesar Millan says it is critical to make sure you and your dog have compatible energy levels. He warns to “never adopt a dog that is higher energy than you.” According to Millan, “you can change your habits, but you can never change your energy.” If you aren’t able to give your dog the attention and exercise that they require, they can become bored or anxious. This can cause behavioral problems in the long term.
On the other hand, “if you get a dog that is lower energy than you, that’s compatible because automatically they’re supposed to follow someone that is stronger than them because they feel safer, calm, confident.”
